The cold chain and sustainable development
The essential role of cold
This has been widely proven during the Covid-19 health crisis, the cold has an essential role in everyday life, as in very varied industrial fields such as health, food processing, research, logistics, or IT.
In the health sector, cold enables pharmaceutical products and heat-sensitive medicines - particularly vaccines - to be stored and transported safely. The innovative treatments developed by pharmaceutical companies are based on biotechnologies and need to be stored at specific temperature ranges.
Cold is also used in many industrial processes such as chemical and plastic products or in IT (data centers, servers, etc.).
More than 15 million people worldwide work in the refrigeration sector - including air conditioning - which uses about 20% of the total electricity consumed worldwide.
This is why there is an urgent need to develop efficient, innovative and low environmental impact refrigeration technologies for the future.
Towards sustainable refrigeration technologies
The United Nations Secretary-General himself called for the development of sustainable cold management worldwide at a United Nations meeting in 2019.
"We need all countries to develop national cold action plans to ensure effective and sustainable cold and to provide life-saving services, such as vaccines and safe food, to all. We call for concrete and strengthened actions by industry. The leadership of major global companies is essential to make this vision a reality," Antรณnio Guterres, UN Secretary-General.
The thermochemical storage based on solid-gas chemical sorption, a process used by Coldway Technologies, provides a high-performance and sustainable solution for the transport of products at controlled temperatures.
Abbes Kacimi, our cold chain expert, will present at the International Cold Chain Conference, this system and its ability to maximize the thermal performance and qualification of a temperature-controlled container for the transport of temperature-sensitive health products.
ICCC 2020: focus on cold chain and sustainable development
The sustainability of cold will be the main theme of this new edition of the International Conference on the Cold Chain.
Organized under the aegis of the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR), it is an unmissable event for cold chain experts.
The ICCC 2020 conference brings together researchers, scientists and industrials from all over the world around a strong theme: the cold chain and sustainability.
From refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps to cold chain transport and storage equipment, the latest technological developments and trends will be presented to offer innovative and sustainable solutions for the processing, transport and preservation of food and pharmaceutical products.
We hope to see many of you in Nantes.
In the context of the restrictive measures relating to Covid-19, you should be aware that a videoconferencing system will be put in place to retransmit conferences in real time to people who are unable to travel.
